Why charter a yacht in Villefranche-sur-Mer
Villefranche is defined by its bathymetry. The bay drops away steeply from the shore, which is why liners have anchored here for over a century and why superyachts that cannot berth in Nice or Monaco make it their base. Sheltered by Mont Boron to the west and the Cap Ferrat peninsula to the east, it is open only to the south, and even a moderate mistral leaves the water inside the rade workable.
The town has an unusual quality for the Riviera: it has stayed small. A single tier of ochre and terracotta facades rises directly from the waterfront, cut through by stepped lanes and by the Rue Obscure, a vaulted passage built in the thirteenth century as a covered defensive route. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre on the quay was decorated by Jean Cocteau in 1957 and is still the most surprising thing in the harbour.
For a charter, Villefranche works best as a hinge rather than a destination. Guests join here when the yacht is too large for Port Lympia; the yacht overnights here when Monaco is full; and it is the first swim of an eastbound cruise and the last of a westbound one. Very few Riviera itineraries do not touch it at some point.
Ashore, expectations should be set correctly: this is a quiet town of small restaurants and a Saturday morning market, not a nightlife port. Guests wanting an evening out take a twenty-minute car ride into Nice or a half-hour cruise to Monaco. That contrast — a still anchorage within reach of two cities — is precisely the appeal.

The Rade de Villefranche
The anchorage itself, and the reason yachts come. Depth and shelter suit vessels of almost any size, holding is generally good, and tender runs to the quay take a few minutes. Captains position according to wind and to the day's traffic, with the western side under Mont Boron the usual choice in an easterly.
Port de la Santé
The small harbour on the town waterfront, used mainly for tenders, local boats and modest yachts. It is where guests step ashore for the old town, the chapel and the restaurants along the quay.
Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Ten minutes across the bay on the Cap Ferrat side, a genuine marina taking yachts of moderate size and offering an alternative berth when a charter wants to be alongside rather than at anchor.
Nice and Monaco
Port Lympia lies fifteen minutes west by sea and Port Hercule thirty to forty minutes east. Charters based at Villefranche routinely use both for embarkation, disembarkation or an evening alongside.

Just beyond Cap Ferrat, a calm bay under the Villa Kérylos with an easy tender run into a small, unhurried town.
Plage Mala, Cap d'Ail
A narrow cove below the cliffs on the run into Monaco, reachable only by steps or tender, with two beach restaurants. The last swim before Port Hercule.
When to charter from Villefranche
May to early October, with June and September the most comfortable months for both weather and space in the bay. September holds the warmest sea of the year on this coast.
July and August fill the best anchorage positions on weekends; arriving in the morning rather than the afternoon makes a material difference.
Grand Prix week in late May turns the rade into a staging anchorage for yachts working Monaco — atmospheric, but not a quiet week to be here by accident.
