Why the route
Cannes and Monaco are the Riviera's two most concentrated event ports — the Film Festival in May, the Grand Prix in May, and the Monaco Yacht Show in September all attract guests who divide their week between the two. A road transfer is roughly ninety minutes in traffic; a private yacht is roughly ninety minutes on the water in settled conditions, with the harbour arrival itself as the finale.
Departure options in Cannes
Boarding is typically at the Vieux Port (Quai Saint-Pierre or Quai Laubeuf) or Port Canto, subject to yacht size and berth availability. During the Film Festival, quays are heavily allocated and boarding times are contracted precisely. Yachts too large for Cannes port frequently anchor in the bay off La Croisette or Îles de Lérins and tender guests aboard from Quai Laubeuf.
Arrival options in Monaco
Arrival is at Port Hercule — passing Cap d'Antibes, Cap Ferrat and Cap d'Ail on the way. During Grand Prix and Yacht Show weeks, Monaco arrivals are contracted well in advance and often assigned to specific arrival windows; outside event weeks, the yacht's central agent confirms the exact berth and pilot arrangement.
Day charter vs one-way transfer
A day charter Cannes to Monaco typically boards Cannes mid-morning, cruises east with a lunch stop at anchor off Cap Ferrat or Cap d'Ail, arrives Monaco in the late afternoon for aperitifs on deck and disembarks in the early evening — either overnight in Monaco or returning to Cannes the same night. A pure one-way transfer is shorter — three to four hours boarding to disembarkation — and is common on Grand Prix qualifying day or the Yacht Show opening day.
Overnight and event use
During the Film Festival many guests board in Cannes, arrive in Monaco for a specific dinner or reception, and either return the same night or overnight aboard in Monaco before continuing the charter east into Liguria. Grand Prix and Yacht Show clients frequently use the reverse — board Cannes on the Wednesday, arrive Monaco Thursday morning, then remain moored inside Port Hercule for the event week itself.
Sample itinerary — Cannes to Monaco day trip
10:00 board Cannes Vieux Port. 10:30 depart east. 12:30 anchor off Cap Ferrat, lunch aboard, swimming. 15:30 depart Cap Ferrat. 16:30 arrive Monaco Port Hercule, tender guests ashore for Casino Square or return aboard for aperitifs. 20:00 depart Monaco for return; 22:00 arrive Cannes. Alternative: disembark in Monaco and remain overnight ashore.
Suitable yacht sizes
The route is well suited to 20–35 metre fast motor yachts — Sunseeker, Riva, Sanlorenzo, Azimut, Wajer — which handle the run comfortably in a morning and enter both harbours without complication. Larger superyachts also run the route regularly and are the natural choice when the yacht itself will remain moored in Monaco for an event week.
Fuel, APA and cost factors
This is a short passage and the fuel draw on APA is modest compared to Monaco–Saint-Tropez. The main cost drivers are dockage — Cannes in Festival week and Monaco in Grand Prix or Yacht Show week both carry premium event pricing — and the yacht's own base fee. For a pure one-way transfer, some charter agreements include a small delivery cost so the yacht can return; we quote both structures transparently.
Luggage and guest capacity
For a same-day trip, keep luggage light — soft bags only. For a one-way with disembarkation in Monaco, hard cases are fine provided the crew has notice. Day-guest counts of ten to twelve are standard; sleeping guest limits (typically twelve) apply if the yacht remains moored overnight.
Weather and scheduling
The Cannes–Monaco leg is sheltered by the coast for most of its length and is comfortable in a wide range of conditions. In a hard easterly, the crossing can be slow; the captain will occasionally suggest a slightly earlier or later departure to avoid the worst of it. Every event-week arrival includes a modest weather buffer as a matter of course.
How this connects to a longer week
A Cannes-to-Monaco leg is often the opening move of a week that then continues either east into Liguria (Sanremo, Portofino) or west to Saint-Tropez. Guests staying in Cannes during the Festival routinely charter for the day of a specific event in Monaco and return the same night; guests attending both the Festival and the Grand Prix charter for both weeks with the yacht as the connecting thread.
